Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday said it would be a fitting tribute to Mahatma Gandhi as 2024 marks 100 years since Gandhiji’s election as Congress president.

A resolution passed by the extended Congress Working Committee (CWC) in Hyderabad, where Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chiefs and Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leaders participated, stated that the people of the country were looking for a change.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Kharge noted that the foundation of democracy and the Constitution was laid by the party and therefore the responsibility to protect it also lies with them.

Discussions on the second day of the extended meeting of the CWC mainly focused on the Lok Sabha polls and assembly elections in five states – Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Mizoram.

In a one-page resolution, the CWC expressed its belief that Congress would be given a “decisive mandate” in those states.

On the party’s preparations for the April-May Lok Sabha elections, the resolution said, “The Congress Party is fully prepared for the coming battle. It is certain that the people of our country want change.

We will fulfill their expectations of law and order. , freedom, social and economic justice, equality and justice.”

Addressing the 147 participants, Kharge stressed the need to maintain discipline within the party and urged the leaders to work by first “shedding their egos”.


Referring to recent Congress victories in Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh, Mr. Kharge said that these results reflect the mood of change among the people.

“Now is not our time to rest. In the last 10 years of BJP rule, the challenges faced by the common man have multiplied. The Prime Minister refuses to address the concerns of the poor, farmers, workers, women and youth; instead, he cannot to look beyond oneself,” affirmed the congress leader.

“In such circumstances, we cannot remain mute spectators. We must unite and topple this dictatorial government to save our democracy,” Kharge added.

The Congress leader also praised the party governments in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh for launching new welfare schemes and models of social justice. “We need to publicize these welfare schemes across the country,” he said.
