Steve Rotheram, the mayor of Liverpool, has written to the Premier League expressing his “strong concern and opposition” to the decision to dock Everton ten points for violating sustainability and profit regulations.

Everton was referred to an independent commission in March regarding an alleged violation pertaining to 2021–2022, and following a hearing, it was determined that the team had exceeded financial limits and ought to face a sporting sanction.

Sean Dyche’s team dropped to 19th place in the standings, above Burnley only by goal differential. The club promptly declared their plan to file an appeal, describing the punishment as “wholly disproportionate and unjust.”
Additionally, Rotheram, the city’s metro mayor, has written to Richard Masters, the chief executive of the Premier League. In a letter obtained by Mail Sport, he stated, “I am writing to express my deep concern and opposition to today’s decision by the Premier League Panel to deduct 10 points from Everton Football Club.”

Not only is the penalty unheard of, but it is also completely out of proportion. It is vital to make sure that any punitive measures are appropriate and just, even though I recognize and support the significance of preserving discipline and the sport’s integrity. This punishment, in my opinion, is not appropriate for the crime.

Given Everton’s willingness and proactiveness in working with the Premier League to ensure that all transactions were FFP compliant when it was evident they were on the verge of breaking the rules, the decision to dock them ten points is excessive.

“There are several mitigating factors in Everton’s debt ceiling transgression that are effectively geopolitical and thus beyond their control.”

As a number of people have noted, the sentence seems harsh for the offense at hand and establishes a new standard. It is more severe than previous fines that were imposed on other clubs for financial violations.

When Portsmouth went into administration in 2010 due to severe mismanagement, they were only given a nine-point deduction. They lost ten points in 2012 for going into administration for the second time in three years.

It is simply absurd to suggest that Everton’s actions are somehow more heinous. I wholeheartedly agree with the club’s appeal and implore you to adopt a more reasonable stance and think about alternate punishment options that do not unjustly target the team’s players and supporters.

Everton is a vital component of the English football landscape, having been a founding member of both the Football League and the Premier League. They ought to receive just, fair, and respectful treatment.
