In the forthcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, India, as the host country, will undoubtedly face tremendous pressure, a prospect deemed potentially detrimental by former Pakistan captain and seasoned pacer, Wasim Akram. Acknowledging the advantages and disadvantages that come with hosting such grand tournaments, Akram provides counsel to Team India’s head coach, Rahul Dravid, and skipper, Rohit Sharma, urging them to proactively prepare the squad to confront the mounting expectations during the mega event. Notably, India carries the burden of being favorites to win this year’s World Cup, given that the last three editions were clinched by the host nation. The historical 2011 victory for India marked the first time a host team conquered the mega 50-overs tournament, a feat that was not without considerable pressure on MS Dhoni and his team at the time. Akram emphasizes that the scenario is unlikely to differ this time for Rohit Sharma & Co in ODI World Cup.

While analyzing India’s prospects in the competition, Akram points out that the Indian cricket team’s bowling attack critically depends on Jasprit Bumrah’s full fitness for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023.

“Of course.. India boasts the impressive talents of Mohammed Shami, who is performing exceptionally well with the ball, but the fitness of Bumrah remains a crucial factor. I am unsure of his current fitness status, but if he is in good shape, it will undoubtedly make a significant difference. Additionally, India possesses exceptional spinners and all-rounders – Jadeja, Ashwin – it remains to be seen who will make the final cut.”

Akram acknowledges the emergence of some exceptional talents from India but emphasizes the inherent challenges of playing on home soil. India’s victory in 2011 stands as evidence of success but also exemplifies the additional pressure associated with hosting such events. Akram notes that the same applies to Pakistan, should they be the hosts.

In response to concerns about match dates and venues, Akram advises Pakistan not to dwell on such matters but instead focus on their performance.

“As I have stated before, if I am asked to play on a particular date and at a specific venue, I must oblige. Whether it is Ahmedabad, Chennai, Kolkata, or Mumbai, these factors do not impact the players. The key is to play the game and not be preoccupied with externalities,” added Wasim.

In conclusion, as the Cricket World Cup approaches, India must be well-prepared to handle the pressure of being the host country, and the fitness of key players, particularly Jasprit Bumrah, will play a crucial role in their performance. Both India and Pakistan, regardless of their hosting status, need to focus on their game rather than external factors to ensure a successful tournament.
