Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s comments during the toss of the 2023 World Cup warm-up match between India and England on Saturday (September 30) at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati raised concerns among cricket fans across the world. The Indian captain’s dissatisfaction with the scheduling, which includes two warm-up matches only days before the competitions begin, is palpable.
Indian captain Rohit was asked what the squad hoped to gain from the game after winning the toss and electing to bat. The captain was forthright in his judgment, stating that there was nothing for the squad to gain, and he made no hints that his words in calling the match were only a formality that they had to perform.
“We’re going to bat first.” It’s scorching outside for no particular reason. We just want to make sure our bowlers stay fresh and bowl under lights, which will be less stressful for them. Because we’ve been playing a lot of cricket recently, we just want to make sure we’re looking after them,” Rohit Sharma said before the toss.
“There’s nothing we can really take away from this game.” For us, the practice match is really a formality. We simply got to play excellent cricket, we played 7 or 8 games lately, and we want to make sure the lads are fresh for October 8th. “We’re playing one of the top teams, and everyone (on the team) is in good shape and ready to go,” Rohit said.
The beautiful weather quickly turned gloomy as black clouds gathered over the stadium and a heavy downpour descended on it. It becomes more improbable that any play will be feasible. On Tuesday (October 3), India will play another warm-up match against the Netherlands in Thiruvunthapuram.
Rohit’s comment raises the topic of the importance of warm-up matches amongst competing teams prior to ICC competitions.
